Newark city New Castle County northern Delaware; incorporated as a city 1951. It is the home of the University of Delaware (1765) and has some varied manufacturing. Nearby Cooch's Bridge was the site (September 1777) of the only American Revolution battle fought in Delaware. The area was settled in the 1690s and named either New Wark for Wark parish in England or New Ark for a meetinghouse here by that name; the community's name was later changed to Newark.
